Schedule for mixes

Here's the schedule for past and current mixes- I know Ang has spent about 3 days at home this summer, and Jaime was, you know, finishing up her dissertation and moving to NYC. Ladies, if you want to go to the back of the cue (to take either November or December) that'd be cool, or if you're close to being able to send and don't want to wait... that's cool too!
I'm loving themixes so far, and am eager to add a few more to my collection.
Ps- I've left addresses off the web site for privacy reasons, more than happy to send that along if you want.

June- DR. DJ AngieANG

July- Jaime Wright

August - Damian Benders

September- John Banas

October - Dan Elgin

a very belated may

hopefully may's disc has finally arrived to everyone. and a big thank you to caroline, who left me a very joyful voicemail pointing out the hilarity of my stuffing naked cds in envelopes and rushing them out with no note or track list or anything. it's true; i doubt they would've made it out at all had i stopped to decorate or accessorize them. =)

my apologies to june, who may have been ready to go since the beginning of the month and ended up stuck waiting on me. thank you for your patience.

so now a track list for may's disc. all year i meant to create a well thought out themed cd, but ended up just throwing together some songs that i like. track 16 is a song i've always liked about finding out that you're going to be a parent, so i'd like to dedicate it to the little surprise growing inside me (who is also the reason that the disc was late in the first place).

1. the queen and i, gym class heroes (they're out of rochester, i wanted to show some local love)
2. born to run, k-os
3. wrong line, jupiter one (thanks for the tip on these guys, damian)
4. cuts you up, peter murphy
5. brother down, sam roberts
6. where have you been?, manchester orchestra
7. bordering, the draft (the rebirth of the now defunct hot water music, an old love)
8. well thought out twinkles, silversun pickups (i can't help myself, i'm infatuated with these guys)
9. the rain, k-os
10. who do you love?, ted leo and the pharmacists
11. dead to rights, the twilight singers
12. non photo-blue, pinback
13. bruised, the bens (because ben folds is the best ben of all)
14. honey and vinegar--acoustic, down to earth approach (recently signed to vagrant records and residents of my small burg of batavia, ny, who also serve me coffee when they are not on tour)
15. 9 crimes, damien rice (because i hadn't realized he had a new album out until i went to put this mix together)
16. new life, blind melon (i love you, little one!)

enjoy, guys. and if you don't like it, i can't help that your taste in music sucks. KIDDING. =)

June in April....

First, thanks to Kristen for switching months with me...it was a tough semester and I had no room for creative juices...the end of the semester left me a shell of a woman.

Second, I absolutely love the first track on the June in April mixed CD. I appreciate that fun mix of a catchy-happy tune with jaded lyrics...so Nelly McKay. I can't recall who sings that song but is the rest of their CD good?

I am so pleased to have a DJ in the group. Makes a difference!

Just got mix vol 3 [clashtrash]; not even done with it the first time around, and felt compelled to comment on its awesomeness.

Its awesome.

Will comment on songs later, have to finish taking it in first.

Private moments

My favorite part about mixes is their intimacy. Yes, the music is often wonderful--and hearing new, good stuff is a bonus. But the real beauty of these things is the private moment I get to share with the creator of the mix. The art of a good mix requires concentration and planning--the coordination of sounds and syllables, the rhythm of syncopation, the pattern of meaning. To put together a mix is to give other people a slice of your life. How were you feeling on the day you mixed the CD? What were the thoughts at the forefront of your mind? In which part of your house were you sitting? Were you eating cereal of drinking whiskey? From the mix, I get a notion of your position, literally and metaphysically.

And it's a gift. It's even better than peeking into your medicine cabinet. We are so far from each other most of the time, but with these collections, we get to sit next to each other one more time. And we dance together around my living room. Or we cry a little in the car. Whatever. It's gorgeous. And it's my favorite part about mixes.

So, thanks, all y'all, for sharing. It's always a pleasure dancing with you...

I heart the new Lucinda Williams cd

It's got a melancholy tone to it, and that may be part of the reason i'm so attracted to it. She's not lost her fire l, but her words are knocking me out in a way they didn't used it.
Of course, for a while I thought that "car wheels on a gravel road" was actually "cartwheels on a gravel road" and I couldn't figure out why on earth anyone would try a cartwheel on a gravel road- ouchy hands. seemed like an interesting metaphor, though.
She's taking on more of a troubadour role with this album, in an ironic sense.
Pick it up if you get a chance, or ask me for a copy of it and I'll likely send it to ya.

Some words from the song "what if" that made me sit in my car and listen to the whole song the first time I heard it:

I shudder to think
What it would mean....

If children grew up happier
And they could run with the wolves
And they never felt trapped
Or hungry or unloved

If cats walked on water
And birds had bank accounts
And we loved one another
In equal amounts
